Step 1 (i). Propene + HBr in the presence of peroxide follows the peroxide (Kharasch) effect, giving the ANTI-Markovnikov product: CH3-CH=CH2 + HBr (peroxide) gives CH3-CH2-CH2-Br, 1-bromopropane, bromine on the LESS substituted (terminal) carbon.

Step 2 (ii). Bromoethane + sodium hydrogen sulphide (NaSH), in alcohol/water, gives the thiol (thioalcohol): CH3CH2Br + NaSH gives CH3CH2SH (ethanethiol) + NaBr.

Step 3 (iii). Chlorobenzene + magnesium, specifically in THF (needed for an aryl Grignard, rather than plain ether), gives phenylmagnesium chloride: C6H5Cl + Mg (THF) gives C6H5MgCl.

Step 4 (iv). Chloroform + nitric acid, on heating, gives chloropicrin by nitration: CHCl3 + HNO3 gives CCl3NO2 (chloropicrin) + H2O. …
