The optic disc, where the optic nerve fibres exit the retina, is called the 'blind spot' because it contains no rods or cones and therefore cannot register any light or image.

At the back of the eye, the retina contains the photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) that convert light into nerve impulses. These nerve fibres from all over the retina converge and leave the eyeball at a single point, forming the optic nerve, which carries visual information to the brain.
