The lateral line system is a mechanoreceptor sense organ found specifically in fish, running along the length of the body to detect water movement, vibrations, and pressure changes.

Fish possess a distinctive sensory system not found in most other vertebrate groups: the lateral line system, consisting of a canal running along each side of the body (visible externally as the 'lateral line') containing sensory receptor cells called neuromasts. These neuromasts are sensitive to changes in water pressure and movement, allowing the fish to detect water currents, vibrations from nearby moving objects (such as prey, predators, or other fish), and to sense their surroundings even in murky or dark water — an ability important for schooling behaviour, predator avoidance, and prey detection.
