Ways of producing induced emf
Since the flux through a coil is , an emf can be induced by changing any of the three quantities on which flux depends:
-
By changing the magnetic field B -- e.g. moving a magnet toward/away from a stationary coil, or varying the current in a nearby coil (mutual induction), changing B while A and θ stay fixed.
-
By changing the area A -- e.g. sliding a conducting rod along rails in a magnetic field, changing the enclosed area of the circuit (motional emf).
