Working

A Nicol prism is made from a calcite crystal cut and cemented (with Canada balsam) along a specific diagonal plane, exploiting calcite's double refraction. Unpolarised light entering the crystal splits into an ordinary (O) ray and an extraordinary (E) ray, which have different refractive indices and hence travel at different speeds.
