The critical angle is the angle of incidence (in the denser medium) for which the refraction angle is 90°; applying Snell's law gives sin⁡θc=1/n\sin\theta_c=1/n.

Definition

When light travels from a denser medium (refractive index nn) toward a rarer medium (e.g. air), the refracted ray bends away from the normal. As the angle of incidence increases, the angle of refraction increases faster and eventually reaches 90°90° (the refracted ray grazes along the interface). The particular angle of incidence at which this happens is called the critical angle, θc\theta_c. For angles of incidence greater than θc\theta_c, refraction cannot occur at all, and the light undergoes total internal reflection.
