The refractive index of a medium (and hence the speed of light inside it) varies with wavelength -- this wavelength dependence is what causes dispersion.

Working

The speed of light in a medium is v=c/nv = c/n, where nn is the refractive index of that medium. For any real (dispersive) medium, nn is not a single fixed number but varies with the wavelength of light (e.g. nn is slightly larger for violet than for red light in glass) -- this is the phenomenon of dispersion, responsible for a prism splitting white light into its spectrum.
