Rod cells are responsible for scotopic (dim-light/night) vision.

The retina has two photoreceptors: rods and cones. Rods contain the pigment rhodopsin, are extremely sensitive to low light and give black-and-white vision in dim conditions — this is called scotopic vision. Cones need bright light and give colour vision (photopic vision).
