The nephron carries out three sequential processes — filtration, reabsorption, and secretion — to form urine and maintain the body's internal balance.

Functions:

  • Filtration: blood entering the glomerulus (a tuft of capillaries) is filtered under pressure through the glomerular capillary walls into Bowman's capsule, producing a cell-free, largely protein-free filtrate.
  • Reabsorption: as the filtrate passes through the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, and distal convoluted tubule, useful substances — glucose, amino acids, most of the water, and essential ions (Na⁺, K⁺, HCO₃⁻, etc.) — are selectively reabsorbed back into the peritubular capillaries.
  • Secretion: the tubule cells actively transport additional waste products and excess ions (H⁺, K⁺, creatinine, certain drugs/toxins) from the blood into the tubular fluid, helping regulate blood pH and ionic balance. …
