A thrombus is a stationary clot at its site of formation; an embolus is a travelling mass (often a broken-off clot) that blocks a vessel elsewhere.

When blood clots abnormally inside an intact blood vessel, it can cause serious circulatory disease. The terms thrombus and embolus describe two related but distinct situations.

Thrombus:

  • A solid mass (clot) formed from platelets, fibrin and blood cells at a particular site inside a blood vessel or heart chamber.
  • It remains attached at the place where it formed.
  • It narrows or blocks the vessel at that spot, reducing blood flow (thrombosis). A coronary thrombus, for example, can cause a heart attack.

Embolus:

  • A mass that is free to travel in the bloodstream. It is often a fragment that has broken off from a thrombus, but it can also be an air bubble, a fat droplet, a clump of bacteria, or a piece of tissue.
  • It moves with the blood until it reaches a vessel too narrow to pass, where it lodges and blocks flow (embolism). …
