Calcitonin, from the thyroid C-cells, lowers blood calcium by curbing bone resorption, depositing calcium in bone and increasing renal calcium loss.

Calcitonin is a peptide hormone secreted by the parafollicular cells (C-cells) of the thyroid gland. It is a hypocalcaemic hormone — it reduces the calcium level in the blood — and works antagonistically to parathyroid hormone (PTH), which raises blood calcium.

Functions of calcitonin:

  1. It inhibits the activity of osteoclasts (the cells that dissolve bone), so less calcium is released from bone into the blood.
  2. It promotes deposition of calcium and phosphate into the bone matrix, strengthening bones.
  3. It increases the excretion of calcium and phosphate by the kidneys in the urine.
  4. The net effect is a fall in blood calcium (and phosphate) levels, protecting the body from hypercalcaemia. …
