Cataract is clouding of the eye lens caused chiefly by ageing, diabetes, UV exposure, injury and hereditary factors.

The lens of the eye is normally transparent and focuses light onto the retina. In cataract, the proteins of the lens denature and clump together, so the lens becomes cloudy/opaque. Light can no longer pass clearly, and vision becomes blurred or, in advanced cases, is lost.

  2. Diabetes mellitus — high blood sugar alters the lens and hastens cataract formation.
