The word 'dropsy' means an abnormal collection of watery fluid in the tissues or cavities of the body, leading to swelling (in general medicine this is called oedema).
In fisheries/aquaculture, dropsy is a well-known and economically important disease of pond fishes:
- Cause: bacterial infection, chiefly by Aeromonas (e.g. Aeromonas hydrophila/punctata), often when fish are stressed or kept in poor-quality water.
- Symptoms: the body of the fish becomes swollen and bloated with accumulated fluid; the scales stand out/protrude (giving a 'pine-cone' appearance); the eyes may bulge (exophthalmia); the fish becomes sluggish and loses appetite.
