The skin is the largest organ of the body, covering its entire external surface. It consists of an outer epidermis and an inner dermis, with associated structures (hair, glands, receptors). It performs many important functions:
-
Protection: the skin acts as a protective barrier. It shields underlying tissues from mechanical injury, from the entry of germs (bacteria, etc.), and from harmful chemicals. It prevents excessive loss of water from the body (keeps it waterproof). The pigment melanin protects deeper tissues from harmful ultraviolet radiation of sunlight.
-
Regulation of body temperature (thermoregulation): the skin helps keep body temperature constant. When the body is hot, sweat glands secrete sweat, whose evaporation cools the body, and the blood vessels of the skin dilate to lose heat. When cold, the vessels constrict and hair may stand up to conserve heat.
-
Excretion: sweat glands of the skin excrete sweat containing water, salts (sodium chloride) and small amounts of urea, so the skin helps remove waste products and excess salts and water.
