Step 1: Oxidation state of P in H3PO3H_3PO_3.

In H3PO3H_3PO_3 (phosphorous acid), phosphorus is in the +3+3 oxidation state.

Step 2: The disproportionation reaction.

On heating, H3PO3H_3PO_3 undergoes disproportionation (a single species is simultaneously oxidised and reduced):

4H3PO3→Δ3H3PO4+PH34H_3PO_3 \xrightarrow{\Delta} 3H_3PO_4 + PH_3

Step 3: Tracking the oxidation states.

Three of the four phosphorus atoms are oxidised from +3→+5+3 \rightarrow +5 (forming orthophosphoric acid, H3PO4H_3PO_4), while the fourth is reduced from +3→−3+3 \rightarrow -3 (forming phosphine, PH3PH_3). This is possible because H3PO3H_3PO_3 has an intermediate oxidation state (+3+3) that can move in either direction.

Step 4: Why H3PO3H_3PO_3 can disproportionate. …
