Step 1: The Haber process reaction.

Ammonia is manufactured industrially from its elements by the Haber process:

N2(g)+3H2(g)⇌2NH3(g)ΔH=−46.1 kJ mol−1N_2(g) + 3H_2(g) \rightleftharpoons 2NH_3(g) \qquad \Delta H = -46.1\ kJ\,mol^{-1}

Step 2: Conditions used.

Since the forward reaction is exothermic and involves a decrease in the number of gas moles, high pressure (about 200 atm) and a moderately elevated temperature (about 700 K, a compromise between equilibrium yield and reasonable rate) are used, along with an iron catalyst (finely divided, admixed with a small amount of molybdenum as a promoter, and K2OK_2O/Al2O3Al_2O_3 as additional promoters in practice) to speed up attainment of equilibrium.

Step 3: Why these specific conditions. …
