Step 1: Preparation of XeO3XeO_3.

XeO3XeO_3 is obtained by the complete hydrolysis of XeF6XeF_6 with excess water:

XeF6+3H2O→XeO3+6HFXeF_6 + 3H_2O \rightarrow XeO_3 + 6HF

(XeO3XeO_3 can also be obtained by hydrolysis/disproportionation of XeF4XeF_4: 6XeF4+12H2O→4Xe+2XeO3+24HF+3O26XeF_4 + 12H_2O \rightarrow 4Xe + 2XeO_3 + 24HF + 3O_2, but the XeF6XeF_6 route is the standard, direct preparation.)

XeO3XeO_3 is a dangerously explosive white solid, so must be handled with great care.

Step 2: Preparation of XeOF4XeOF_4.

XeOF4XeOF_4 is obtained by the partial (controlled, limited) hydrolysis of XeF6XeF_6, using only one mole of water per mole of XeF6XeF_6:

XeF6+H2O→XeOF4+2HFXeF_6 + H_2O \rightarrow XeOF_4 + 2HF

XeOF4XeOF_4 is a colourless, volatile liquid.
