Neon is one of the lightest noble gases, with an extremely high ionisation enthalpy (far higher than xenon's) and a very small atomic size, giving it essentially no tendency to form chemical bonds. No stable compound of neon (or helium/argon) has ever been isolated under normal conditions — unlike xenon (and to a lesser extent krypton), which can be induced to react with fluorine because of their comparatively lower ionisation enthalpies.
