In parallel, 1Rp=1R1+1R2+1R3\dfrac{1}{R_p}=\dfrac{1}{R_1}+\dfrac{1}{R_2}+\dfrac{1}{R_3}.

Concept. In a parallel combination each resistor is connected across the same two points, so the potential difference VV is the same across each. The main current II divides into branch currents I1,I2,I3I_1, I_2, I_3.

Derivation. By conservation of charge (junction rule):

I=I1+I2+I3I = I_1 + I_2 + I_3

Applying Ohm's law to each branch (Ik=V/RkI_k = V/R_k) and to the combination (I=V/RpI=V/R_p):

VRp=VR1+VR2+VR3\frac{V}{R_p} = \frac{V}{R_1} + \frac{V}{R_2} + \frac{V}{R_3}
