But-2-ene satisfies the condition for geometrical isomerism because each double-bond carbon carries two different groups (a methyl and a hydrogen). In cis-but-2-ene the two methyl groups lie on the same side of the double bond (and the two hydrogens on the other side); in trans-but-2-ene the two methyl groups lie on opposite sides.
