Huckel's rule states that a ring system will show the extra stabilisation (resonance energy) characteristic of aromaticity only if it satisfies four structural conditions simultaneously: the ring must be (1) cyclic (a closed loop of atoms), (2) planar (every ring atom lying in one plane, so their pp orbitals can all align parallel for continuous overlap), (3) fully conjugated (an unbroken cycle of overlapping pp orbitals around the entire ring, which in practice usually means every ring atom is sp2sp^2 hybridised), and (4) must contain exactly (4n+2)(4n+2) pi electrons delocalised in that system, for some non-negative integer nn (i.e. 2, 6, 10, 14, ... pi electrons). Checking benzene against each: it is a closed six-membered ring (cyclic); it is experimentally known to be completely flat (planar); every one of its six carbons is sp2sp^2 hybridised with an unhybridised pp orbital perpendicular to the ring, giving an unbroken cycle of pp-orbital overlap (fully conjugated); and it contributes exactly …
