A heat engine converts heat into continuous mechanical work by carrying a working substance through a repeating cyclic process. In every cycle it draws in heat Q1Q_1 from a hot reservoir (the source, at temperature T1T_1), converts part of it into useful work WW, and rejects the rest, Q2Q_2, as waste heat to a cold reservoir (the sink, at T2T_2). Since the working substance returns to its original state at the end of every cycle, ΔU=0\Delta U=0 over the complete cycle, so by the first law W=Q1−Q2W = Q_1 - Q_2.

(Schematic: source at T1T_1 supplies heat Q1Q_1 into the engine; the engine outputs work WW; the engine rejects heat Q2Q_2 into the sink at T2T_2; energy balance Q1=W+Q2Q_1 = W + Q_2.)
