Biopatent = a patent over a biological product/process; biopiracy = exploiting another region's bio-resources/traditional knowledge without authorisation or fair sharing; biosafety = the safety measures that guard against risks from biotechnology and GMOs.

Biopatent:

  • A patent is an exclusive legal right given by a government to an inventor to make, use and sell an invention for a fixed period. A biopatent is such a right granted for biological materials or processes — for example a new strain of microbe, a gene sequence, a genetically modified organism, or a biotechnological method. It rewards innovation but is controversial when it covers naturally occurring bio-resources.

Biopiracy:

  • The exploitation, patenting or commercial use of biological resources and the associated traditional knowledge of a nation or indigenous community by another party (usually foreign organisations/companies) without proper authorisation and without fair sharing of benefits. Well-known examples that were challenged include patents on the properties of Neem, Turmeric (Haldi) and Basmati rice.
