Gene cloning amplifies a specific gene by inserting it into a self-replicating vector within a host organism; PCR instead amplifies DNA in a test tube using the heat-stable enzyme Taq polymerase.

Gene cloning: the process of producing many identical copies of a particular gene or DNA fragment. The gene of interest is inserted into a vector (such as a plasmid), which is then introduced into a suitable host cell (commonly bacteria, e.g. E. coli). As the host cell multiplies, the vector (carrying the inserted gene) replicates along with it, generating numerous identical copies ("clones") of the gene. This is a foundational technique of recombinant DNA technology.
