After parturition, before true milk (lactation proper) begins, the mammary glands secrete a special fluid called colostrum for the first two to three days.
- What it is: a thick, yellowish secretion, lower in fat and sugar than mature milk but much higher in proteins, minerals and, crucially, antibodies.
- Why it matters: the newborn's own immune system is not yet mature, so colostrum provides passive immunity — ready-made maternal antibodies protect the infant against infections during the vulnerable first days. This is why breast-feeding of colostrum is strongly recommended. …
