Ovarian changes during the menstrual cycle (28-day cycle) and their hormonal control:
- Follicular phase (Days ~1–13): Under the influence of FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) from the pituitary, several primary follicles in the ovary begin to grow into secondary and then mature Graafian follicles. The growing follicle itself secretes estrogen, which rises steadily through this phase and also stimulates regrowth (proliferation) of the uterine endometrium.
- Ovulatory phase (around Day 14): The rising estrogen level triggers a sudden mid-cycle surge of LH (Luteinising Hormone, also assisted by FSH), called the LH surge, which causes rupture of the Graafian follicle and release of the secondary oocyte from the ovary — ovulation.
- Luteal phase (Days ~15–28): The ruptured follicle transforms, under continued LH action, into the corpus luteum, which secretes large amounts of progesterone. Progesterone maintains and further prepares the endometrium (secretory phase) for potential implantation. If fertilisation does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates into the corpus albicans, progesterone and estrogen levels fall sharply, and the endometrium is shed — menstruation — beginning the next cycle. …
