After fertilisation occurs in the ampullary region of the fallopian tube, the zygote undergoes repeated mitotic divisions (cleavage) as it travels down the tube towards the uterus, passing through the morula stage and forming a blastocyst. The blastocyst consists of an outer layer of cells (the trophoblast) and an inner cell mass.
On reaching the uterus (around day 6–7 after fertilisation), the trophoblast layer of the blastocyst adheres to and gradually embeds itself into the thickened, receptive endometrial lining of the uterus. This process is called implantation.
