During spermatogenesis, round spermatids undergo spermiogenesis (a series of structural changes — acrosome formation, condensation of the nucleus, development of the flagellum, loss of most cytoplasm) to become elongated, mature spermatozoa while still embedded in the Sertoli cells that nourish them.
