The most agriculturally important group within this family is the Nucleopolyhedrovirus, or NPV. NPV-based biopesticides are particularly valued because of their exceptional host specificity: a given NPV strain typically infects only a single target insect species, or a small number of closely related species, and is essentially harmless to plants, mammals, birds, fish and non-target insects such as pollinators.
