Two well-known genera of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) commonly used to enrich paddy-field soils are Anabaena and Nostoc. Like Rhizobium, these organisms carry the enzyme nitrogenase and can fix atmospheric nitrogen into forms usable by plants.
