IF5\text{IF}_5 belongs to the XX5′\text{XX}'_5 interhalogen family. Around the central iodine there are six electron domains: five bonding pairs (to the five fluorine atoms) and one lone pair, so iodine is sp3d2sp^3d^2 hybridised, with the six domains arranged in an underlying octahedral electron geometry. The single lone pair occupies one of the six octahedral positions, pushing the remaining five fluorine atoms into a square pyramidal molecular shape (a square base of four fluorines with the fifth at the apex, roughly opposite the lone pair).
