Pseudohalogens are dimeric molecular species that closely mimic the chemical behaviour of the diatomic halogens (X2\text{X}_2), each corresponding to a pseudohalide ion that itself behaves analogously to a simple halide ion, X−\text{X}^-. Cyanogen, (CN)2(\text{CN})_2 or N ⁣≡ ⁣C-C ⁣≡ ⁣N\text{N}\!\equiv\!\text{C-C}\!\equiv\!\text{N}, is the dimeric pseudohalogen corresponding to the cyanide ion, CN−\text{CN}^- -- just as chlorine Cl2\text{Cl}_2 corresponds to chloride Cl−\text{Cl}^-. Thiocyanogen, (SCN)2(\text{SCN})_2, is the dimeric pseudohalogen corresponding to the thiocyanate ion, SCN−\text{SCN}^-. (A third common example, (OCN)2(\text{OCN})_2, corresponds similarly to the cyanate ion, OCN−\text{OCN}^-.) Like the true halogens, these pseudohalogens can undergo com …
