The Wheatstone bridge consists of four resistances PP, QQ, RR, SS connected to form the four arms of a quadrilateral, with a battery (through a key) connected across one diagonal and a galvanometer (through its own key) connected across the other diagonal. The bridge is said to be balanced when the resistances are adjusted so that the galvanometer shows exactly zero deflection, meaning no current at all flows through the galvanometer branch -- the two ends of the galvanometer branch are then at exactly the same potential.

Applying Kirchhoff's rules under this zero-galvanometer-current condition gives the balance condition:
