Kirchhoff gave two rules for analysing electrical networks: the junction (current) rule and the loop (voltage) rule.

1. Kirchhoff's Junction Rule (Current Law): At any junction in a circuit, the algebraic sum of all currents entering and leaving the junction is zero:

∑I=0\sum I = 0

Currents flowing into the junction are taken positive and those flowing out negative (or vice versa). This follows from conservation of charge — charge cannot accumulate at a junction in steady state.

2. Kirchhoff's Loop Rule (Voltage Law): The algebraic sum of the changes in potential around any closed loop in a circuit is zero:

∑ΔV=0\sum \Delta V = 0 …
