Step 1: Preparing Cl2Cl_2 from HCl (oxidation of chloride).

Chlorine is obtained by oxidising concentrated HCl, e.g. with manganese dioxide (Weldon/Deacon-type process):

MnO2+4HCl(conc.)→ΔMnCl2+Cl2↑+2H2OMnO_2 + 4HCl(conc.) \xrightarrow{\Delta} MnCl_2 + Cl_2\uparrow + 2H_2O

(Industrially, the Deacon process catalytically oxidises HCl gas with air/O₂ over a CuCl2CuCl_2 catalyst: 4HCl+O2→CuCl2, 723 K2Cl2+2H2O4HCl + O_2 \xrightarrow{CuCl_2,\ 723\ K} 2Cl_2 + 2H_2O.)

Step 2: Preparing HCl from Cl2Cl_2 (direct combination).

Chlorine combines directly with hydrogen to give hydrogen chloride:

H2(g)+Cl2(g)→2HCl(g)H_2(g) + Cl_2(g) \rightarrow 2HCl(g) …
