Step 1: (i) NaCl heated with H2SO4H_2SO_4 in the presence of MnO2MnO_2.

MnO2MnO_2 oxidises the chloride ion (liberated as HCl in situ from NaCl + H2SO4H_2SO_4) to chlorine gas, itself being reduced from Mn4+Mn^{4+} to Mn2+Mn^{2+}:

2NaCl+MnO2+3H2SO4→Δ2NaHSO4+MnSO4+2H2O+Cl2↑2NaCl + MnO_2 + 3H_2SO_4 \xrightarrow{\Delta} 2NaHSO_4 + MnSO_4 + 2H_2O + Cl_2\uparrow

Check: Na (2=2), Cl (2=2, as Cl2Cl_2), Mn (1=1), S (3=2+1=3), O (2+12=14; 8+4+2=14), H (6=2+4=6) — balanced.

Step 2: (ii) Chlorine gas passed into aqueous NaI.

Chlorine, being a stronger oxidising agent than iodine, displaces iodine from sodium iodide solution:

Cl2(g)+2NaI(aq)→2NaCl(aq)+I2(s)Cl_2(g) + 2NaI(aq) \rightarrow 2NaCl(aq) + I_2(s) …
