Other freedoms

Beyond the right to life and the rules on preventive detention, Article 19 gives

citizens several other distinct freedoms. The freedom of assembly allows people to gather peacefully

and without weapons -- to hold public meetings, take out rallies, or organise demonstrations -- as

long as the gathering does not threaten public order. The freedom of association allows citizens to

form unions, cooperatives, political parties, and other organisations to pursue shared goals

collectively, since many objectives are far harder to achieve alone.

The freedom of movement allows a citizen to travel freely across the country, without needing

special permission to cross a state's borders, while the closely related freedom of residence allows

a citizen to settle in any part of the country, subject to reasonable restrictions to protect, for
