The first concern is informed consent. Because participants were misled about the true purpose, their original consent cannot be considered fully informed in the ordinary sense. The chapter's own position on this is that deception is not automatically ruled out, some studies do require withholding the specific purpose so that participants' natural behaviour is not distorted by knowing what is really being measured, but even then, researchers are obliged to explain the general nature of the study to participants before it begins, and participation must remain genuinely voluntary, with no coercion.
The second, and most important, safeguard is debriefing. Once the study is complete, the researcher must fully inform participants of the study's real purpose (that anxiety and its effect on recall, not general knowledge, was actually being studied), and must take active steps to ensure participants leave in the same physical and mental state as when they arrived, addressing and removing any anxiety, embarrassment, or distress the deception or the anxiety manipulation itself may have caused. …
