The experimental method is widely regarded as psychology's most powerful tool for establishing cause and effect, but it has clear strengths and weaknesses.

Its central strength is that, by deliberately manipulating the independent variable and comparing an experimental group against a control group while holding other factors constant, a well-designed experiment provides more convincing evidence of a genuine cause-effect relationship than any other method described in this chapter, since alternative explanations can largely be ruled out through control and random assignment.

Its first weakness is low external validity: because experiments, especially laboratory experiments, are conducted in highly controlled, often artificial settings, they only simulate real-world conditions, so results obtained in the lab may not generalise well to situations outside it.

Its second weakness is an ethical limit: some questions simply cannot be studied experimentally because doing so would harm participants, for example, deliberately depriving children of nutrition to study its effect on intelligence would be unethical, even though it might be the most direct experimental test. …
