A standardised test is a psychological test that has been developed through a systematic process and possesses several defining technical characteristics.

Objectivity is the first characteristic: if two or more researchers independently administer the standardised test to the same group of people, they should arrive at more or less the same scores for each individual, which requires clearly worded items and a precisely specified procedure for administering and scoring the test.

Reliability is the second characteristic: the test produces consistent scores for the same individual across repeated measurement. This is checked through test-retest reliability (administering the same test twice to the same group after some interval and correlating the two sets of scores) and split-half reliability (correlating scores on odd-numbered items against even-numbered items within a single administration, to check internal consistency).
