The survey method is used whenever a researcher wants to capture opinions, attitudes or social facts from a large number of people relatively quickly.

Example 1: A researcher wanting to know students' attitudes towards the privatisation of education would use a survey (questionnaire or interview) administered to a sample of students, since this is essentially a large-scale opinion question.

Example 2: Election-time surveys, of the kind reported on television and in newspapers, asking voters which political party or candidate they intend to support, are a classic use of the survey method, since they aim to capture the existing distribution of opinion across a large population quickly.

Despite its usefulness, the survey method has genuine limitations. First, respondents may provide inaccurate information, sometimes because of simple memory lapses about past behaviour, and sometimes because they are unwilling to reveal what they genuinely believe about a sensitive or personal issue. …
