Q.What are the goals of scientific enquiry?

Like every scientific discipline, psychology pursues its enquiry through five closely connected goals, each building on the one before it.

Description is the starting point: the researcher records a behaviour or phenomenon as accurately and specifically as possible, distinguishing it clearly from other, similar behaviours, for example, breaking down the broad idea of 'study habits' into concrete, observable components such as attending classes regularly and following a fixed revision schedule.

Prediction follows once a behaviour has been accurately described. By examining how the behaviour relates to other behaviours or conditions, a researcher can forecast, within some margin of error, when or under what conditions it is likely to occur, for instance, predicting that a child who devotes more time to study is likely to score well in an examination.

Explanation goes further and asks WHY the behaviour occurs, seeking out the causal or antecedent conditions that bring it about, or that prevent it from occurring, in order to establish a genuine cause-effect relationship between two variables.

Control means being able to use that causal understanding to deliberately increase, decrease or otherwise change a behaviour by altering its antecedent conditions; the change a therapist brings about in a client's behaviour through therapy is a good example.

Application is the practical purpose behind the other four goals: psychological research is ultimately conducted to solve genuine problems and improve people's quality of life, whether through education, therapy, or interventions such as yoga and meditation for reducing stress.

✓Final answer

The five goals of scientific and psychological enquiry are description, prediction, explanation, control and application, pursued in that logical order. Accurately describing a behaviour makes it possible to predict it, predicting it depends on some explanatory understanding of its causes, and only once a behaviour is genuinely explained can it be controlled and that knowledge usefully applied to real problems.
