Scientific research follows a systematic procedure made up of four stages, shown in the chapter as a continuous cycle in Figure 2.1.

The first stage is conceptualising a problem. The researcher selects a broad theme, narrows it down into a specific, researchable question based on past research, observation or personal experience, and then frames a hypothesis, a tentative, testable answer to that question.

The second stage is collecting data. This requires the researcher to design the study: deciding who the participants will be, which method (observation, experiment, correlational research, survey, and so on) will be used, what tools (such as an interview schedule or questionnaire) are needed, and how those tools will actually be administered, before the data collection itself takes place.

The third stage is drawing conclusions. The collected data is analysed using statistical methods, ranging from simple graphs such as pie charts and bar diagrams to more advanced statistical procedures, to check whether the data support the original hypothesis.

The fourth stage is revising research conclusions. If the data confirm the hypothesis, the existing theory is strengthened; if not, the hypothesis is revised or a new one proposed, and this revised hypothesis is tested again with fresh data, which is why the cycle loops back to stage one.

✓Final answer

Conducting a scientific enquiry involves four steps performed in a continuous cycle: conceptualising a problem, collecting data, drawing conclusions, and revising research conclusions, with the revised conclusion feeding back into a new round of conceptualisation, making scientific research an ongoing, self-correcting process rather than a single, finished exercise.
