A well-structured response should include: (1) The triggering event — what specifically happened (e.g., receiving a disappointing test result, a conflict with a friend, an unexpected success). (2) The emotion and its intensity — naming the specific emotion(s) felt (e.g., anger, sadness, anxiety, joy) and noting how strong the reaction was. (3) The immediate physiological/behavioural reaction — e.g., a racing heartbeat, difficulty concentrating, wanting to withdraw or, conversely, wanting to talk to someone immediately. (4) The coping strategy actually used — this is the core of the activity, and should be tied explicitly to strategies covered in the chapter, such as: appraising the situation more objectively after the initial reaction, self-monitoring (recalling how similar situations were handled before), seeking support from a friend, parent or teacher, using relaxation or positive-thinking techniques, or engaging in a hobby/activity to shift focus. (5) A brief evaluation of whether the strategy used was effective, and whether, in hindsight, a different chapter-based strategy might have worked even better. …
