Achievement, affiliation and power are three important psychosocial motives that shape adolescent behaviour, each learned mainly through social interaction rather than arising from bodily need.

Need for achievement (n-Ach) is the desire to meet standards of excellence; it energises and directs behaviour and shapes how situations are perceived. Example: an adolescent who studies for many extra hours before an exam, deliberately choosing moderately challenging practice questions over easy ones, and who regularly asks teachers for feedback to track and improve their performance, is displaying high n-Ach.

Need for affiliation is the motivation to seek closeness with others, physically and psychologically; it is aroused both in moments of stress/helplessness and in moments of happiness. Example: an adolescent who works hard to stay part of a friend group, texts friends constantly, and feels most comfortable studying or spending free time in the company of others rather than alone, is displaying high affiliation need.

Need for power is the motivation to influence or have an effect on others' behaviour and emotions, expressed (per McClelland) vicariously, intrapersonally, individually, or through organisational roles. Example: an adolescent who runs for head boy/head girl or a school council position, or who takes visible pride in leading a group project and directing how it is done, is displaying the power motive, seeking influence and enhanced standing among peers. …
