The trauma an individual experiences during a disaster can range from merely perceiving that such an event is happening nearby, to actually encountering it directly in a way that is genuinely life-threatening.
Either kind of traumatic experience may, in some individuals, lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Its defining feature is that the person re-experiences the traumatic event through flashbacks and continues to have overwhelming, intrusive thoughts about it, even after a substantial period of time has passed — the trauma keeps replaying itself in the person's mind well beyond the point when the immediate danger has ended. This ongoing re-experiencing leaves the person emotionally disturbed and interferes with their ability to draw on adaptive coping strategies in ordinary, everyday activities.
