Effective emotion management is therefore essential for functioning well socially, academically and personally.
Several evidence-based ways to manage negative emotions exist. First, cognitive strategies: enhancing self-awareness of one's own emotional states and their causes; appraising situations objectively, recognising that it is one's own evaluation of an event, not the event itself, that determines whether stress follows; regularly self-monitoring past accomplishments and states to build a positive, realistic self-image; self-modeling, using one's own best past performance as an inspiration; and perceptual reorganisation/cognitive restructuring, deliberately reframing negative thoughts into more reassuring ones.
Second, lifestyle and relational strategies: developing a creative hobby or interest; nurturing good-quality friendships and relationships, since the company of positive people tends to improve one's own mood; practising empathy and mutual support; and engaging in community service, which builds insight into one's own difficulties while helping others. …
