The first circumstance is the deep connection between India's own history and the history of European, particularly British, capitalism and colonialism. As the chapter notes, capitalism in the West entailed a worldwide expansion, and India's own economic and social structure was directly reshaped by that expansion — for instance, the entry of British manufactured goods undercut traditional Indian industries and pushed more of the population into agriculture rather than allowing the kind of urban-industrial growth that occurred in Britain itself. Because of this, understanding the European roots of sociology is, for India, also a way of understanding part of its own colonial and economic transformation, rather than something disconnected from Indian history.
The second circumstance is the role of colonial administration in generating knowledge about Indian society. Surveys, census operations, and ethnographic studies of India's castes, tribes, and communities were carried out to serve the practical needs of colonial governance, and this body of administrative knowledge and method later became a resource that Indian scholars and social investigators could draw on and build upon, even while developing their own independent lines of inquiry distinct from the colonial administration's original purposes.
The third circumstance is India's own tradition of social reform. Debates and movements around caste inequality and gender within Indian society were already active and ongoing, and Indian sociology grew in close dialogue with these movements, giving it a distinctive set of core concerns — caste, community, and social inequality in particular — rather than simply reproducing the European discipline's original preoccupation with industrial class society. …
