Section B rewards format discipline and accuracy more than long writing. Keep this checklist in mind before the exam.
The writing formats at a glance.
- Notice — boxed; name, NOTICE, date, heading, 40-50 word body with the five Ws, signature block. Formal and crisp.
- Poster — boxed; issuing body, a catchy slogan, short message phrases, event details, call to action. Visual and persuasive.
- Advertisement — classified is telegraphic (category heading + crisp details + contact); commercial is creative (brand, slogan, features, offer, contact).
- Business letter — full block format; subject line; polite, precise body with all details; "Yours faithfully,". Covers enquiry, order, complaint and replies.
- Application / Letter to Editor — block format; applications name the post and qualifications; editor letters state a problem and suggest remedies.
- Speech / Debate — audience address, topic/motion, 2-3 developed arguments (debate also rebuts), strong close, "Thank you."
- Article / Report — article has a title, by-line, intro-body-conclusion and a viewpoint; report is factual, past tense, third person, with five Ws and a by-line.
- Note-Making & Summary — title, headings/sub-headings in a clear hierarchy, phrases not sentences, an abbreviation key; summary is one connected paragraph in your own words.
Grammar essentials. Keep tenses consistent; pick modals by certainty/obligation; match articles and quantifiers to countable/uncountable; ensure subject-verb agreement (watch each, one of, neither); back-shift tense and change pronouns/time words in reported speech; form the passive with be + past participle; in editing change only the one error asked. …
