Speech / Debate Writing
A speech is a talk delivered to an audience to inform, persuade, or motivate; a debate is a formal argument for or against a motion. Both are tested in CBSE Class 11 and share a structure, but differ in stance: a speech can be balanced, while a debate takes one firm side and rebuts the other.
Exact format expected.
- Opening — a greeting addressing the audience ("Respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends...") and a statement of the topic or motion. For a debate, state clearly whether you speak for or against.
- Body — the core argument in 2-3 well-developed points, each with reasons, examples, facts, or a short rhetorical question. A debate should also counter the opposing view.
- Conclusion — a strong closing line, an appeal, or a memorable statement, followed by a thank-you ("Thank you.").
Use rhetorical devices (a question, a quotation, repetition) to engage the listener. Write as if speaking aloud.
CBSE marking scheme (typically 5-6 marks). Roughly: Format (salutation/address, topic statement, thank-you) – about 1 mark; Content (relevant, logical, developed arguments) – about 2-3 marks; Expression (fluency, persuasive tone, grammar) – about 2 marks.
Model example (opening and key points of a speech).
Good morning, respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends. I stand before you to speak on a subject that touches every one of us — "The Importance of Reading Habits in the Digital Age."
We live in a world of endless scrolling, where a video lasts seconds and attention spans shrink by the day. Yet the quiet habit of reading remains our strongest tool for building focus, empathy, and knowledge. A good book does what no algorithm can — it lets us think slowly and deeply.
First, reading sharpens the mind: studies repeatedly link regular reading to better memory and vocabulary. Second, it widens our world — through books we live a thousand lives and understand people unlike ourselves. Finally, reading is a refuge from the noise of screens, a space that belongs only to us.
